I'm in the process of making a button down shirt. I wasn't sure where to post this.....I have looked online for answer, but didn't see this specific topic. Fortunately, I'm working on a muslin so it's practice because the first two attempts were not good. I'm so happy this wasn't my good fabric!
The collar band is thick in the area for the buttonhole, and doesn't feed easily. I have a Husqvarna and I'm using the sensor foot for buttonholes. I tried putting a safety pin on the edge to help pull it through as it worked. This helped, but my buttonhole is not pretty.
Do you have any tips or techniques for this?
ETA I didn't want to delete this post, in case someone else was looking for some help on this......
I found a Threads article for buttonholes and tried it on the band. Put water soluble stabilizer wrapped around the part of the band where the button hole is stitched. Working from the edge of the shirt up so no pulling necessary. I also needed to let the machine do the work....not pushing or pulling as it made the buttonhole. Perfect buttonhole!!
Also, suggested by Threads...to finish, leave water soluble stabilizer on, put Fraycheck on post-it note, take a pin and apply to inside of buttonhole. Let dry before cutting.
Hope this helps someone else.

I bought a buttonhole compensation plate for my Bernina designed for this very problem, but haven't used it yet. You've got a good tip there with the stabilizer and the Fraycheck. I'll be needing that soon. Thanks!

You're welcome Sky....glad it helped. I've often struggled with uneven looking buttonholes...where they looked "messy". I was surprised at how well the stabilizer helped.

You're welcome HTH....I fear putting them in- as it's the last step and could ruin all that work.

If you never fasten the top button, omit it. I haven't done one in 30 years at least, as I always leave it open. It's much neater.

I never button the top button, but I feel like it should be there- otherwise it would look off...

Just adding a photo of the completed buttonholes.
