She, of all people, has inspired me to clean house (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

I had known Rachael Ray from “30 Minute Meals” from years ago, but that was about it. I recently heard an interview with her about her new book “This Must be The Place.” It’s a collection of recipes and essays about home that she wrote during lockdown. In the interview, she talks about how she was raised to show respect for her home, regardless of where she lived, by keeping things clean and organized. This simple yet profound statement has resonated with me and now I make time to clean my kitchen every day, either at night before bed or first thing in the morning before DH gets up. The funny thing is, that’s his biggest gripe-- he hates to see a dirty kitchen when he gets up to make breakfast. You’d think that years of fussing about it would motivate me to clean, but it never did. Now I clean it, which only takes a few minutes, because I appreciate my home and want to show respect for it. Again, it’s just a simple mindset thing, but it clicked for me. It reminds me of the saying, when the student is ready, the teacher will come.

I don't know where I learned it, but I do a clean as you go habit--especially in the kitchen. Used a kitchen knife? rinse it and set aside. Used a pan? soak it immediately--maybe easy to swish around, rinse and put away. A measuring spoon or cup? Same thing, rinse, swish, and see if it can dry someplace. I have a dish washer you can use the shelves to put the rinsed but needs more into it as you go. You will be a better cook! Now as for my sewing room--that's another story!

I'm the same way about the kitchen. I hate seeing a mess left from the day/night before, so I clean it all up before going to bed.
I have a grind & brew coffee maker that I set for 20 minutes before I get up. It's nice to get the first cup of coffee & sipping it at a cleared/clean counter space.

ohhhh...grind and brew coffee maker. I have been nudging DH for one of these for several years. He does the coffee making--French Press poured through a filter. It's awkward but tastes wonderful! Which machine do you have--can you control the brew time, also can you make just one cup at a time?

Yes, my perspective was changed dramatically like that too, when I read FlyLady. She calls cleaning a “house blessing”. I love my beautiful house, and gratitude motivates me to keep it in presentable condition. Our minds and mindsets are a powerful tool!

Was I the only one that wondered why the OP didn't tell her hubby if the mess bothered him he was welcome to clean it up.. I am thinking/wondering just who made that mess he doesn't like looking up.
Because every night I check the kitchen and make sure its all neat and tidy .. and every morning I awake to a mess made by MR. P while eating his breakfast and making his lunch. I am always greeted by numerous tupperware and rubbermaid containers that have been emptied..
Its worth noting he often goes into the kitchen late at night to grab a snack or such also.
Every now and then I tire of it and grab a box and fill it full of his mess and sit it outside for him to deal with. .He gets the message and for a few days it sinks in but then its back to normal.
When he retires I am putting him in charge of the kitchen..

You think like my DH. When I read him the OP his first response was: "what's wrong with her husband--can't he help clean up the kitchen?"

You are not the only one wondering.

DH was Mr. Neat when we first met. I think a lot has to do with when small children learn to clean up their toys before they grab new toys. But, neatness can change a lot when one isn't well.
We don't have a living room anymore, DH spends most of his time on the couch now surrounded by his favorite things. I don't mind ! As long as DH can stay alive I'm very happy !

If he makes his breakfast and lunch, he probably figures it like where one person cook’s and the other does the dishes. Lunches are often packed in plastic dishes: I hate washing those because it’s so hard to feel when they are clean.
