My husband needs to wear this suit tomorrow . I know the length the pants need to be and can understand how to hem and put the cuff back in. I have done that much before. However, the circumference of the pants leg is just a bit over 1/2” wider from center front crease to center back crease at the point where the hem edge will meet the pants leg. I don’t want the hideous puckering that will result if I don’t alter the side seams. I have seen videos describing either tapering from the knee down to where the hem attaches or opening the seam allowance to create a wider circumference from the hem edge up. But the videos and descriptions I can find are all for a plain hem…not cuffs. And I just can’t wrap my mind around how to make that information apply to my situation. I hope all of this makes sense, as I am very confused . I am also a very visual learner, so pictures, video tutorials, clear descriptive explanations are great. Thank you

Can you just remove the cuffs and hem?

If you want to keep the cuff feature and replace: After removing it, shorten the leg lengths as needed, then taper the trouser legs equally inside and outside leg seams from the knee down to the bottom using the cuff width (at bottom and top) for the new angle needed. Replace the cuff feature. This has worked for me before.

Tina, thank you for your response. I’m not sure I understand what you are asking, which likely just reveals my ignorance. Are you asking about just altering to a plain hem?
genierita, thank you for your response also. Are you suggesting that I make the width from inseam to side seam the same for the entire length of hem (everything required for the cuff) up to where it is stitched to the pants leg, then grade out to the original width from inseam to side seam up to the knee? Just want to make sure I’m understanding correctly.

Mark on the inside the final length of the trouser.
Now, starting maybe 1 1/2" above that, make a new seams (inseam and outseam) that angles out from the hem to the bottom of the pant leg. That should be enough, though I will sometimes undo the last little bit of seam maybe 3/4" or so when hemming.

costumecarol,
Thank you so much for your reply. I must apologize that I did not see it until just now. At the time I was so consumed with the time constraint and pressure of getting the pants hemmed that day. I did end up doing essentially what you recommended in your post. It worked quite well. You obviously have a lot of experience, which I lack! You were kind to take the time to try to help me out. Thank you also for the url for that nifty tool, the Cuff Shapa. I never even knew such a tool existed! All the best to you!!!
