I have mislaid my SnapSetter tools and snaps and want to order some more. I plan to use them to fasten shirts and shirtdresses for me (because I am terrible at buttonholes and so is my sewing machine).

I want to get the ring type, but I can’t seem to make up my mind between size 15 (10mm, 3/8”) and size 16 (11mm, 7/16”).

https://www.snapsource.com/snaps/snap-sets/ring-snap-sets/?size-16-ring/white/3-3-8

(not sure that the images of the snaps are to scale on this page)

I can’t remember what size I had previously, except that it definitely wasn’t the small one (8.5mm, 5/16”).

I plan to use shirting material, maybe chambray or light flannel, but nothing thick.

I might also use them on a henley placket on knits. Again, mid t-shirt weight fabric, nothing heavy.

I know it’s only a small difference, but I can’t seem to make up my mind. Should I just get both? I can probably sell one size range on to a sewing friend if I decide I don’t want it.

You could find a shirt with snaps, (sorry I don't have one, or I'd do it for you) and measure them. I just put on a set of the size 14 on a baby's onesie yesterday. They are small. I have an extra size 16 tool if you want it. It might cost more to mail it though than buy a new one.

I have way too many yards to count, and I will never use them up, but I will die trying!

I believe the 16 is the more common size as that is the size of the setter I have. They’re only 1mm different and there are 25.4mm/inch, so really a very small size difference.

If not a strain on the pocketbook, just get both. Look on eBay? for a gently used one and buy the other one new?

I would suggest the 16. The 16 base is the one you use for any of the larger sizes.

From the website:
Quote:
The snap sizes 16, 18, 20 and 24 use all the same
Size 16 Socket, Stud and Back Ring parts? Therefore, to set one of
these larger Snap Tops, all you need is the Size 16 SnapSetter®
plus the corresponding Tool Adapter Base. You'll always go back to
the original Size 16 SnapSetter® to attach the stud and ring portion
of the snap set.

Another vote for the size 16. If you ever use their pearl snaps, they have by far the most colors. I'm thinking of adding the size 14 set for doll sewing, but they only have white and black snaps.

That’s very kind of you, but I’m in Australia. (Should have mentioned that!)

I got my dad to examine the shirt I made him that I used the Snap Source snaps on a few years ago. He can’t tell whether they are 10mm or 11mm :-) I think you would need calipers to be sure!

Thank you, everyone! I think I am going to go with the size 16 on your advice because of the wider colour choice.

I think I will get silver, as that goes with many things, and maybe dark navy or grey for everything else. (I don’t usually sew with/wear black.)
