I'm making a flannel nightshirt for my granddaughter and the fabric she had her heart set on was in pieces, instead of a single length, when I bought it. Since I was barely able to cut the front, back and sleeves, I decided to use seam binding instead of facing the v-neckline.

OK, I just can't seem to get it right. I saw a tip on about.com, but have tried that three times now, and it's not working for me. I'm running out of scraps and seam binding for practice.

I need to figure out how to miter at the V--can anyone help me? I'm about ready to just begin and end at the V and "fake it." Although I don't think that's going to look very good.

I haven't sewn for almost 20 years and am now getting back into it. Wow, have things changed! Am enjoying reading these boards.

Oooo, I have been trying to work out this very thing for a while. It seems like I should be able to figure it out, having made a gajillion quilts with mitered bindings, but in fact I can't. Hmmph. Annoying.

I am waiting for someone's answer (yeah yeah, "with bated breath" even).

For the night shirt you might want to try a knit band ... I use them on flannel PJs all the time. Stay stitch the V section of the shirt front and clip almost to the V in the stay stitching. Make a band equal to 75% of the neck size, quarter and attach as you would with a Tshirt....but when you get to the V, stretch the fabric a bit and sew the band on straight. Now you have a floppy neckband in the front --- fold the shirt front in half along the V (right sides together) and pin mark the stitching line that will make your neck band a V...Ths stitching line should be a continuation of the center front line of the shirt......stitch and then flatten out the floppy piece of the band (its' small) and tack it down.

I'm sure this isn't the best description - but it really works. I picked up this technique from a Kwik Sew pattern for a V neck T shirt.

Cut binding in two equal lengths, the total of which is ~90% of the neckline length, plus seam allowances. Width of strips is equal to 2x desired finished width plus 2 seam allowances. See Figure 1.

Sew A to A, B to B (pivoting at dot), and C to C. Press in half lengthwise WS together. You'll end up with a binding which looks like Figure C.

Quarter mark binding and neckline. Align center front seam of binding with center front vee of neckline (which previously should be staystitched). Align raw edges of binding with raw edges of neckline, binding RS to neckline RS. Stretch between quarter marks and sew around neckline, pivoting at the point of the vee.

Press seam allowances toward bodice (down). Edgestitch or coverstitch from top, catching the seam allowances you pressed under.

Thanks, Kathi. I looked at a couple of my t-shirts and that's how they're finished, but I can't seem to get it to work with woven bias tape.

Debbie,
Thank you for your great V-neck directions. I have been looking for an alternative to my way of doing it. This is great.
