Being tall, and never having the problem of having to shorten jeans, I found this article interesting
LA Times Fashion

Interesting how the serger stitch is used.

Okay, someone please explain the Franken stitch to me. Are we talking about what would essentially be a very narrow cuff flatlocked in place? I hope so, because I can do that....

I found a close-up image of the serge stitch hem discussed in the article. It looks like the back side of a flatlock stitch.

alright, according to this article, I'm average height! I was wondering when did 5 ft. 4 in. tall become average, I thought it was at least 5 ft. 6 in.?

Statistics on average height

This is why it annoys me so much that RTW and most patterns are aiming at 5'5" or more and Hot Patterns is for 5'9".

A 34 inch inseam is too short for me. I'm 5' 6.5". That makes me think they are designed for women who are 5' 4".

Wow, Neefer! You must have legs that go from here to eternity. You sound like my daughter. I'm 5.5 and my inseam is 30", a 34" inseam and I would be lost.

My DD is 5.4" ad a 32" inseam, we always buy the long pants for her.

I'm a little lost on why that annoys you. The point of the patterns is that someone of modarate ability can shorten them with relative ease, isn't it?

That article is why I've never understood why women's jeans aren't sold like men's, by the inseam length. I'm also 5'6-1/2" and nowadays I can usually find ones that are long enough, unlike years ago. That does NOT hold true with dress pants unless I find ones sold as "tall". A 34" inseam is not long enough for me, either, unless I was gonna show up barefooted.

DD, who is a nip shy of 5'4", has to put up with jeans that drag the floor, get dirty, get worn through. I guess I should learn this shortening technique to shorten them, but it's just something she's learned to put up with.

And BTW, in our family, a woman who is the average height of 5'4" is considered short and petite. And, I only have one friend who is that height or less...most all of them are 5'6" or taller. I'm truly surprised the "average" height is 5'4".
