I have some leftover sweatshirt fleece I would like to use to make pants for my baby grandson. He is six month size. The fabric is not stretchy – maybe 10% cross grain. I have several patterns for stretch pants in his size, some with a gusset and some without. I have a Jalie pattern for sweatpants, but the smallest size is 2T. Can I go with the stretch pants patterns I have?

I say go for it. Perhaps make them a bit larger than the pattern, and the gusset will give them more movement ease. Or look for a free pattern online...I do anything to avoid going to the store, too much jumps into my cart that I didn't plan on buying.

If you use fabric with a lower percentage of stretch than the pattern calls for, the pants will most likely end up too small.

If you feel like experimenting, you can try making them larger by just adding a bit to the seam allowances, as if you were sewing a size or two larger. You will (hopefully) end up with legging style pants made of sweatshirt fabric. Nice and cozy!

Another option is to look at the Jalie pattern and try grading the 2T down to a smaller size.

Honestly, I'd seek out a different pattern altogether unless you are really confident about your grading skills. The leggings patterns you have will turn out too small in 10% stretch fabric (most leggings pattern require at least 50% stretch, maybe even more), & 2T on a 6-month size baby will be like the size of his entire body.

Luckily there are tons of free patterns out there for baby clothes, if you really don't want to spend money on a pattern. Look for baby sweatpants or joggers, & make sure you check the fabric stretch recommendations before you commit!
