Can you remove rivets from jeans? (Moderated by Sharon1952)

Does anyone know how to remove rivets from jeans? I've taken in the side seams on a pair of bought jeans and the rivets on the pockets are uncomfortable. I've tried prising them off with pliers. No luck yet.
Any suggestions?

I've never tried to remove rivets from jeans, but I asked DH about removing rivets from machinery, which we've done, and he says for that, they will only come out one way. One side of the rivet has the flange when you get it, and the other side has a flange which is formed when the rivet is inserted and "smashed" down. You want to cut off the smashed down edge, or else squeeze it up so it's a tube again. You may be able to use a cutting pliers for this, or something. I think your main problem is going to be that there isn't much to work with or to get hold of. This may be a long process. If you have a man available, this may be a good honey-do project, as it's sort of tool-intensive, and you could palm it off on him.
Good luck. You many end up having to cut the fabric to get them out.

They can be taken out, but it's not easy. I've had DH take a screwdriver and hammer to one and he got it out, but it took some work.

I probably have too many sewing machines, but how am I supposed to resist when they're either free by the side of the road or people give them to me?

Are the rivets now on the inside of the jeans?? If so, just cut closely around them.

Thanks for all your suggestions! The rivets were just near the new seam, so I couldn't cut them out. I gave the jeans to my DH, who bent up and cut off the circle of the inside half of the rivet then pulled it all out of the fabric. It was very labour intensive, but he did a great job!
