Invisible zippers have been the topic of a few threads lately. So I thought I would share a link I found that has very clear drawings and instructions on putting in an invisible zipper. The link is from the Home Sewing Association HSA.

Thanks for the link, BeckyC. I just saved it to favorites. Been majorly dragging my feet on doing an invisible zipper and even have the foot to do it. On my next pair of pants, I'm putting one in!

I printed this out. Great info for my sewing notebook.

Currently working on a boys quilt. Sized 40 x 40 inches. It has chickens, chicken eggs, cows, fish, sea life, afield with water, Dachshunds, mini sailboats, and many colorful other fabrics. The blocks are a 4 x 4 finished size, so many of them are needed.
This my 4th quilt in 7 months.

I put an invisible zipper in my silk duponni top tonight and it turned out fabulous! I replaced the button opening in the back of the top with an invisible zipper and it looks so nice. I researched it a lot and bought my Bernina #35 foot and practiced, practiced, practiced. I did an invisible zipper about 30 years ago, but haven't done one since. It'll be a way of life now when I need zippers in garments.

Did you do anything special to reinforce the dupioni, since it doesn't seem to like stress? Or is your zipper basically in a non-stress area?

I have some silk dupioni in my stash but have yet to use it.

I did use fusible stay tape in the seam allowance and just into the stitching line to strengthen the zipper opening. I also underlined the top with silk organza which will also absorb some of the wear and tear of opening and closing the zipper. And a must is to serge the zipper opening as this fabric does ravel. I learned that I could line up the edge of the zipper tape to the inner edge of the serger stitching and that put the coils of the zipper right on the 5/8" stitching line! I lucked out as I didn't pin at all on the first side of the zipper I stitched.

Does anyone know where you can purchase a metal invisible zipper foot. I have a plastic one and it doesn't work to well.

Janome makes a foot specifically for putting in invisible zippers, so if you have a Kenmore or Janome it should work. On my Bernina I just use one of the pintuck feet --- the one with three tunnels under it.
