Anyone interested in a p/t gig in Alterations at a David's Bridal store? I'm recruiting for a west Texas location (Lubbock) but there are locations across the country. I recently became the lead (ie replacement title for manager) of the Alts department here and we're ramping up for the busy season. Different sewing levels available, different pay scales, hours vary. Not the same as working on your own, on the other hand you have support, help, structure if a customer is unhappy and remedies that don't come out of your own pocket... If you're in my area please send me a pm, otherwise you can apply on the website - davidsbridal.com
Thank you!

Coincidentally there is a thread started a couple of days ago HERE. The OP has an upcoming interview at David's Bridal and has questions that you could possibly answer?

You would do best starting with your own alterations business. My mother who had sewed professionally when I was little, started doing alterations when I went to college. She picked up the extra business from a friend. You need an elevated platform about 30" sq. and 6-7" high for the person to stand on particularly for hems and not breaking your back with bending. She would remove the existing seam binding and reuse it for shortening. I guess few items have seam binding today. One of her clients had one hip higher than the other, so a lot skirt waists adjustments on dresses and skirts waistbands.
I took my sewing machine to college the second semester and did a few alteration such as replacing zippers and shortening hems. The shorter skirts were coming in.

Absolutely loving my Janome 500e embroidery machine, very creative. Problem with all my stash for clothing!

I notice that on our neighborhood forum there are quite a few inquiries about where to get simple things like zippers and hems replaced or altered or repaired. However, all these are done by local dry cleaners but people think they can get it done cheaper. Doing this work for people can be challenging and not remunerative. If anyone starts a business of alterations, be sure to charge top dollar and do excellent work. Do not sell yourself short.
My DMIL spent decades as a home seamstress doing alterations. She stopped making garments for people early on as they were unwillung to pay for fair labor involved and even in alterations were always trying to fit a 20 into a 10.

She did get paid $$. We lived in a upscale large town where people had $$. She did fitting mostly, not hems. Her professional sewing was not for individuals. When I was 3 or 4 and we lived in Tampa, my mother designed and created some sportswear for a boutique. The store even advertised some sketches with her name in the newspaper, When I was a bit older and we lived outside New Orleans, she made a line of little girl dresses for a shop. She was sewing her clothes, my clothes and my sisters. I don't think it ever occurred to her to sew for someone else.

There are different levels and different garments to work on so you might find something even if not specifically trained in this area (I wasn't but a lot is common sense and/or working on similar fitting/sewing needs).
