I'm encountering a new problem when sewing blouses and vests - I seem to be getting a "floating out" in the lower back - it just wants to hang away from the waist. If I take the front and give it a yank down and toward the front, the back then goes to where it should be, closer to my body. On some patterns, I make an alteration for a narrow shoulder, but its just 1/4" and isn't necessary on all patterns - depending on there style - I don't know if that's where I should be starting. The bust fits fine, the shoulder line is good, there aren't wrinkles in the armhole. The upper back may be a bit narrow. These are observed on two new patterns I've done - a Kwik Sew vest and a Fav. Things blouse - but an older basic KS blouse I have seems to want to do the same float thing now. I can't figure out what I can do to eliminate this float. I should mention that I have a I'm my hip-bust measurements on a pattern size usually match up, but my waist is usually a size larger. So I usually increase the width at the hem just a bit so I can button it up at the tummy. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Do you need to release the back hip? Seems to me if it sits OK when you yank up, that's giving you a bit more room for the garment to sit freely below the waist. It may be fine at the hem, but need more roon at the high hip. Just a thought.

Thanks for the reply, Georgene. Actually, I'm pulling the blouse down and toward the front...it seems that there is a bit of extra fabric floating out from the back...but if I take it in with darts, I don't have the width I want...thinking about it, maybe I should make the front wider and the shape the back narrow toward the bottom?

Try out your idea in a rough muslin. It can't hurt, and it will give you an opportunity to see if it works. Cut 1" seam allowances to give your self room to adjust. There's no rule that says your front and back patternpieces have to be the same width, especially if you are not!
