I have some long skirts that are too big that I bought at Goodwill for a couple dollars each, figuring I'd cut them down and it'd be good practice and if I messed up it wouldn't cost too much. So, the first one I messed up twice. Then I figured I'd try a last ditch attempt. I told myself, be very careful cutting! It's too hard to explain exactly what I was doing (maybe because I didn't really know myself, lol ) but I ended up cutting into the fabric in a place/way that makes it totally unusable for a long skirt Darn it! Now I have to start all over on the next one! I know, at least it was only a couple $$ and my time (which I actually have very little of), but I want something finished NOW!!

Thanks for letting me vent!!!

There's no way you could use it for a gored skirt, is there? You'd need narrow panels instead of wider ones.

If not, I know how you feel. I'm still trying to figure out how to save the skort that I cut out over a month ago. I pre-measured, and it looked like everything would fit with room to spare, so I didn't pay attention to it when I went to cut it, and don't have room to cut out the last panel.

It's a good thing I used test fabric instead of my final fabric, but it still irks me.

You might realize you are in very good company and get some interesting ideas from one of these threads:

Your Worst Sewing Mistake

Stupid Mistakes

If you search the boards using the word 'mistake' you will find many others. Don't feel bad - it is all part of the learning process.

Look at it as your learning experience. Hope the next skirt works out into a wearable project!

Thanks! I'll look at that idea when I get home
And Glenda, thanks for the links, I'll definitely read through them! And thanks everyone for the encouragement. I managed to get absolutely nothing done last night. First I started ripping the stitches out of a different skirt. That was taking too long and I got tired of doing it. So I decided to try cutting something new using a pattern. I ended up opening (and trying to refold) 4 different patterns!! Then I gave that up and decided to copy a different skirt, but forgot to add on a seam allowance, so of course now it'll have to have 3 pieces instead of 2. Then I gave up and went to bed. Guess I wasn't meant to do anything yesterday!

If things are going wrong and you're starting to get frustrated that's the time to quit. The temptation is to switch to something else so you can have a success to balance out the failure, but generally I find I just end up with another failure. There's always tomorrow.
