I am trying to decide on mid-range cost sewing machines for sewing handbags. I don't need a serger. I am interested in a Janome or Brother(with sideways sewing). Does anyone use the sideways sewing feature? Is it actually helpful? Are there any other other makes I should be looking at? I have an old low-end mechanical with a walking foot now to sew all the layers. Thanks for any info.

What type of material will these hand bags be made out of? Leather? Vinyl? Canvas?
I use my computerized Janome to make handbags, but I have only worked wtih various fabrics and no leather. I do know that one can purchase needles for sewing leather, but I would think it would be best to use an industrial/heavy duty machine for that.
Has anyone sewn leather on a home machine?

I use the side motion stitching on my Brother all the time. I really find it very handy, especially in tight places like attaching handbag straps, etc. If I can get the area under the needle, I can stitch a box with an X in the center for secure straps.
I'm not sure what model you have but I can sew all types of bags including up to 4 layers of garment weight leather or suede without a problem using the appropriate needle and slowing the speed down.

I missed the sideways stitching part of the question.
Are you talking about the ability to drop the feed dogs and stitch sideways by moving the fabric free-hand?
I know this seems like a stupid question, so forgive me.

Some of the newer machines have what is referred to as "side motion". The feed dogs are engaged. There is nothing free motion about it. This setting allows the machine to sew sideways. To sew a box (mine is push button) I push right side motion, touch button to go forward, touch button to sew to the left, touch button to sew backwards and so on. I have diagonal as well. So, if I wanted a more secure box, I could sew an X in the middle of the box.
This function is really not that new. I had it on my 10 year old Viking #1 but it was a bit primitive as compared to my Brother. Maybe a better example would be you could sew on a patch without ever changing the position of the fabric. You just change the direction that the machine is sewing.

Yes, you are right about the sideways sewing not being new. Back in the 80's there were computerized models that also sewed sideways. Back then then there were models that also worked without the foot pedal by stopping and starting with just a touch of a button. It seems this is becoming popular again.
