Clear, solid lubricant on tension assy? (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 5/4/06 8:54 AM ET
I was cleaning out the fuzzies from my machine after sewing a small project with faux fur (yuck). Anyhow, as I brushed near and arround the upper thread tension assembly on my machine, some clear jelly like lubricant came off. I assume that this should be replaced, but what is it?
Here is a photo of where this mystery lubricant came from. It is being pointed out with the red straw in this photo-click here-
Thanks,
Jenny

Your photo would not pull up for me. However, from your description, it sounds like the fuzzies just adhered (as in static) to the fast moving thread as it passed through thread tension plates and created a slight "gum ball" of fuzzies and machine oil.
This happens to me frequently when I use fat, fluffy fabric combined with fast sewing.
You might just need to re-oil. However, before doing so, clean very well between your thread tension plates (in accordance with your machine instructions.) I don't think sweeping a brush around the plates would clean out enough remaining fuzz.
I just pass a piece of fine fabric (pulled taut) between my thread tension plates to clean out clinging fuzzies, but then I'm a 'fast and dirty' sewer and my machines are used to crude treatment.
You may wish to treat your machine more tenderly and look up the manufacturer's recommended method, in the event it differs from mine.

Kate,
Thanks for your reply. The area I was concerned about wasn't between the tension plates. I wasn't having any issues with the machine, but I knew that the fabric that I was working with had a lot of lint/fuzzies, so I decided to give the machine a bit of maitenance by cleaning it up. That's when my lint brush picked up the jelly type lubricant.
Would really like to know what it was.
I think that I fixed the link to the photo Sorry about the technical difficulties!

That goo was sewing machine lubricant (similar to the stuff that you see beneath newly-delivered cars). It's an oil-based product, similar to sewing machine oil, but purposefully more viscous to protect moving parts that may touch each other and protect metal from rust.
If you wiped off a significant amount of the goo, it might be a good idea to replace it: do a google search on 'sewing machine lubricant' and you should find quite a few online sources.

Oil is NOT the same as lubricant. Lubricants are usually grease and stays viscous and, well, greasy. Oils - especially light ones like sewing machine oil - can harden and get sticky-especially with lint and dust mixed in.
If yours was solid, clear and jelly-like, I am wondering if it was some kind of silicone. You might want to call the manufacturer or your sewing machine dealer.

I am going for a level of perfection that is only mine... Most of the pleasure is in getting that last little piece perfect...Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just keep showing up and doing the work.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I understand the difference between a thinner weight oil product and a thicker gel/grease/lubricant. I have the sewing machine oil on hand, but not any other sewing machine specific gel/grease/solid type lubricant. That I would need to purchase. Once I determine what it is, it shouldn't be difficult to get.
Yes it could also be a silicone based product.
I have requested the information form the manufacturer and I am waiting to here from Janome.
