I am new at serging and purchased a Singer Ultralock 14SH654. It serges just fine. I've used it on a previous project with no problems. I'm working on another project now and for some odd reason the thread in the tension disc for the left needle keeps popping out. I put it back in securely and I can feel it "click" in there just fine. But the thread keeps popping back out after it sews for a little bit!! Anyone have any suggestions?

Don't know if this will help but I had thread catching on something and that would pull the thread out of the tensioner. Check to see if it's snagging on the spool or something else. HTH

Yeah--I would check the thread feed off the cone or spool--and if you are using spool thread, do you have discs to place on top of the spools so the thread doesn't catch on the sides of the spool ends. Make sure you have spool or cone on the proper pin on your thread stand. Also, I would completely unthread the offending thread and re-thread it. You would be amazed how many times I found a tiny loop that shouldn't be there hidden in some of the thread paths! Good luck!

I agree with Patty and Mrs. Moos. Also make sure your presser foot is in the UP posiiton before you place the thread into any of the tenion disks. Hope these tips help. Diane

Thanks, you guys, for all the suggestions!! I need all the help I can get! Cloud9, I think you solved it. I put the presser foot UP and readjusted the thread in the tension disc and tried running the machine again. I ran it for quite a bit and it didn't pop out. I'm hoping that was the problem and it doesn't happen again. I really don't like returning things to the store.

I'm really bad with the presser foot because it doesn't raise up very high so my brain won't register it being up/down. Bad, bad Pyrose!!

Hi Pyrose,
Yes indeed it is difficult to tell at a quick glance if the presser foot on the serger is in the UP position and really is easy to overlook. Since the up/down position of the foot is so subtle, I've gotten in the habit of reaching over and touching the presser foot lever to assure myself that the foot is UP. Diane

PS: I make sure that the presser foot in the UP position while threading my regular sewing machine, too. Seems to prevent tangled threads.

I've been having this exact same problem on the (I think) exact same machine. It wasn't a problem for about a month or two, but yesterday it started doing it again. I was just thinking of posting this question. I'll have to try these suggestions.

If your serger doesn't automatically release the tensions like when you raise the pressure foot you might want to always adjust the tension dial to "0" when threading the tension disks then readjust the tension setting after threading. This way your thread is held properly in the discs.

Now I'm having problems with the thread popping out of the lower looper tension disc. So I checked to make sure I wasn't doing something silly (again!) and I can't find any reason for it to do this. I've re-threaded, checked the presser foot to make sure it was up when I put the thread in, and I even set the tension dial to 0 while doing this.

Now here's the weird part: it only pops out when I'm doing a rolled hem. I can run it as much as I want while serging seams and it's fine, but as soon as I start to do a rolled hem, it will pop out every time. I checked to make sure I had the switch set to the rolled hem position, and it's fine.

If anyone has any suggestions/answers I sure would appreciate it. I have some costumes I need to use my serger for.
