I am making the Basic shell again. This is my 3rd time. The last 2 times I got to this exact spot and messed it up. I do not understand what she wants me to do. This time, I would like to do it correctly.

Step 16 says "Turn facing and neck trim into finished position, slightly rolling seam line to the wrong side. Understitch by rolling the seam allowances to the trim. Press."

Can anyone explain this to me so I understand it and know what to? Correctly, this time. I briefly looked in my sewing books, but did not do a through search.

It sounds like that step is explaining how to understitch. Understitching is stitching the seam allowances to the facing so the facing doesn't roll to the outside.

I have the shirt next to me. The last thing I did when sewing it was to attach the bias neck binding. I did this, clipped the corners of the keyhole, and turned the keyhole area only.

Do the directions want me to put the 2 layers of bias binding together and sew? I know I do not want to top stitch this yet.

By the 2 layers, I mean when I sewed it down, I sewed it with a 3/8 SA. I know that what I have done so far is correct. I just have trouble with this one step!

Clear as mud?

I have the twin set pattern and the instructions for the neck finish sound the same.

I don't have that pattern so I'm not sure about the keyhole.

What Kathleen is describing in the instructions is a bound neckline. You have sewn the binding onto the shirt and now you are going to roll the binding to the wrong side and cover up the seam allowance. Then you pin in place and topstitch from the right side. You will then trim off any excess fabric close to the stitching.

Does this sound right?

I know I roll the binding to the inside to cover the SA. This I understand. Don't I do some understitching before topstitching?

When I put the binding on, I sewed it at 3/8. This basically divided the binding into 2 parts.

If I turn them to the inside, I now have them laying on top of each other, like bunk beds.

Do I sew them together to make them roll more to the inside or ignore them and simply topstitch?

This is what confuses me.

Carol,

I have no idea what pattern you have, but without seeing your blouse, the directions sound very confusing. OMG, you must be tearing out your hair.

Do you have any sewing books? Have you looked in any of them for information on binding a neckline? There are different ways to do it. First, I thought you were talking about a facing around the neckline, then I thought you were talking about a single binding, now, I don't understand if you're doing a single or double binding.

Aren't there any pictures with your pattern directions?

I really wish I could help you but I'm sitting here befuddled.

I think I just had a "light bulb" moment! I was thinking I had to sew the 2 binding allowances to the seam allowance, but this is not correct. I sew the shirt seam allowance at the neckline to the binding I just added on.

I am pretty sure this is correct.

Carol,

Baste it in first. If it's OK, then you can stitch permanently.

Did I get it right or not? I think I am correct. I sew the shirt SA to the binding SA. I do not know why she could simply not say this and not use the words she did. When she called things a facing and trim, that had no clear meaning to me. I have a lot of trouble understanding her directions. It takes me a while to figure out just what she means.

I had the same trouble when doing the keyhole part. I finally just tried it, and much to my surprise, when I cut the fabric and interfacing, it turned on its own. I simply could not imagine how it would do this. I have never owned a keyhole shirt, so I did not know what to expect.
