Can anyone tell me what an inset ruffle is? How is this different from a regular ruffle that you just attach to a hem or whatever?

I'm interested in trying to make my daughter some pants that are very ruffly on the bottom. I've seen them described as inset ruffles and am interested in learning this technique. Would appreciate any guidance or pointers in the right direction.

I see this term used in garment sales to describe a ruffle that is sewn into a seam. I suppose that this differes from a ruffle that is topstitched on to a garment.

funsewer is exactly correct.

On a pair of pants with ruffles on the bottom edges, there are two ways to do it...

[1] attach the ruffle separately, after you've done the hems.

[2] insert the ruffle between the fabric and a separate facing...instead of doing a hem...this would make the inside of the pant legs look nicer.

The newest Ottobre has a few patterns using this technique, a pair of pants and a top/dress. They use a separate "hem piece" for the pants and separate facing/under layer for all the ruffles on the top/dress. It comes out looking very nice and was very easy to do. I reviewed the top pants here HTH!
