I just got done making a skirt with flaired, 75" circumference hem. I used my machine's 3/8" folded hem attachement to put in a machine hem. It came out pretty well, but I do have some twists/ripples, especially towards the end, which I suppose is due to the arc of the hemline.

How do I minimize the problem in the future?

Thanks,

The only way I know of is to serge the edge, gathering it in slightly, press and sew.

Or do a baby hem which means sewing around three times.

It is very hard to control the shifting of the layers with the rolled hemming foot - I, too, have had this problem when I have used it.

I'll be interested to see if others have better suggestions than mine.

cheers

Once upon a time.... I hemmed about 10 miles of curved edge ruffles using a narrow hem foot. I became pretty proficient toward the end of the this project... costumes for a performance group. I was never able to completely avoid those wonky wrinkles. Occasionally raising your presser foot just a little to relieve tension on the fabric while the needle is down seems to help but not 100% successful. I found serged rolled hems the best... I purchased a surger in time to do the last 2 costumes... doing all those tiny hems drove me to it.

I think I will avoid the narrow hem foot on curved edges in the future. I wanted to give it a try since I hadn't used it much before. Figures I'd pick the wrong application! Talk about "live and learn".

Thans for the help.

I really dislike the narrow hem foot. I've found it takes me less time to use Georgene's tip on baby hems. And her method gives better results.

I'm with Ann and now use Georgene's technique when I don't want that serged rolled hem. I did a very tiny hem on a dress for DD this week, the final hem was less than 1/4."
