Where'd my seamline go? (Moderated by Deepika)

When you stretch your knits in sewing, you can't really use the seam guide because as you stretch, the seam shrinks a little. Do you mark the seams on knit fabrics to make sure you're always sewng on the right seamline: 5/8 inch when the fabric is "relaxed"?
I hate marking and I kinda have it down to the minimum right now. Is there any tip to stretching the fabric and still being able to gauge the 5/8 inch seam!

Why are you stretching out your knits? Do you only have a straight stitch? If you are using a zig-zag or a stretch stitch, you shouldn't have to stretch the fabric. Just keep it flat.
If you have to stretch it, then marking the seam line is best. In fact, it's a good thing to do regardless.
But since you don't want to, or if you don't want to mark the fabric, try this: take a scrap of your fabric and mark the seam line at the same depth as the pattern (say, 5/8"). Make a double layer, just like you were sewing a seam. Go to your machine and sew it, stretching it the amount you would use when making the garment. See where the edge lines up on your machine guide. Use that as the reference when sewing up your garment.
Hope that was clear.

With a great wardrobe that's still in the flat-fabric stage.
