Pattern Drafting & Modification (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)

I have an empire waist dress pattern that I want to modify to pay homage to a great new dress for fall 2006 by Chaiken. It appears as though the fabric from the front hem comes up to the empire waist seam at the right of center and is softly pleated into the seam. Any suggestions on how that might be accomplished? The dress is made in silk--something with some weight and a drapey hand.

Here is a link from InStyle Magazine, where I first saw the dress:

Lovely dress! I can see why you'd like to make one.
My idea is very simple - so simple I'm hesitant to post it because my lack of pattern-making skills will be obvious. But here goes:
To me, it looks like the front panel is double the desired finished length, and the bottom of the fabric is brought up on the outside and dramatically gathered to one side, then sewn into the empire waist seam. The back would probably have to be hemmed before front and back are joined at the side seams.
I look forward to hearing from someone who knows how to this effect was created.

Sew 'n' Go, I think you are spot on.
Also, the fabric would have to be of a type where the "right" and "wrong" sides are virtually indistinguishable.

Sewing is my therapy!

The dress in motion really makes it appear as though it is indeed doubled. I wonder, then, if the back skirt should be, too, so it hangs right. I might just have to find out where I can actually LOOK at it!
Thanks for the suggestions!

When I looked at one of the pictures, I wondered if the back was caught up in a similar fashion. A look at the real garment would answer all. ;-)
