Re: Mismatched buttons a new trend? (posted on 8/30/06 10:15 AM ET)
I found this jacket and this trench coat at anthropologie.com with unmatched buttons. You need to zoom in to see the details. Is this in fashion or what? That may encourage me to use up some odd buttons. But any rules there?

Unmatched buttons go in and out of style, but I haven't investigated this most recent version (oh, I am so hopelessly out of the style loop). IMO, the key to it at any time is to avoid the crafty-crafty look (i.e. no Jubliee Jumbles strikes again).... how? Not sure, to be honest, but I would think keeping them within a range of style or color or material would help. Love those anthropologie coats, but then I love most things anthropologie. LOL

Seems to be very much an Anthropolie style "thing", if you like it go for it. You want to be careful to avoid the "crafty" look, though, so I like the suggestion to keep them coordinated with some sort of theme (all wood, all metal, etc.). You also want to avoid having it look like a repair ("oh my button fell off and I had to replace it with something close enough to match").

Keep in mind that this will create a more casual look regardless of how tailored the garment is. But it does add some whimsey.

Thanks for the input. I guess it takes more craftsmanship to avoid the "crafty-crafy" look. :)

Mismatched buttons - well at least they buttoned the jackets up properly for the pictures. When I saw this I wondered how NO ONE noticed that it wasn't buttoned properly! (person who dressed the dressform, photographer, person who put it on the website). At first I thought it was an assymetrical look, but you can clearly see the buttonhole that didn't get buttoned! Careless!

This is what happens when people are rushing to deadline. I bet they were scrambling to complete a catalog and just missed it. Anthropologie does a lot of this style on purpose, so that's another reason.

It actually wouldn't look bad as an asymmetrical jacket except for the lump where the button hole was missed.

Just found an article about mistmatched buttons on Threads magazine. Now I'm more tempted to try it.

Thank you for reminding me that the correct word should be mismatched>, not unmatched. :)

A jacket in the August (I think) BWOF had mismatched buttons. I like it.

It is not a mistake, it's made that way. The print catalog says of this item "extra-buttonholes inspire artful dishevelment".

Aaaah! Thanks for the info. Good to know the disheveled look is in style. I won't feel so bad about not ironing my pants!
