I have made various attempts lately to make blazers.
I noticed that the current fashion trends feature slim sleeves, on blazers and coats. Meaning the upper part of the sleeve are more fitted, still with ease of course but slimmer, which I find more flattering especially if the blazer is a close fit such as what we see overall in the fashion world.
I myself is a petite, with a size 12 pattern. 99 percent of the time I will make a fitted blazer, witch I find more flattering for my figure especially that my lower body is a size 14.
I have this problem which seems to reoccur everytime I try a new pattern. The upper sleeve always look bulky from the side as if the jacket is too big. I know I can't just take the seams in because it will affect the armhole.
I find often patterns deceiving on that aspect, I get this with some blouses too. I have started to purchase patterns that show an actual photo, and not just a drawing because I have encountered that problem so many time.
Am I alone with this problem? Any insight anybody?

I've been having problems with armhole and sleeves on fitted jackets, too. One thing I have found to be helpful is to try the jacket on before you put the sleeves on. Look at the shoulder point, the underarm, and the lower curve of the armhole. I found that my armhole shape needed to be corrected because it was distorted by the FBA and other alterations that I had done nearby. I use my fitting resource book and several books with jacket construction techniques to guide me.
Then, construct the sleeves and put them on your arm to check the shape of the sleeve cap. I discovered that even though I have to take in the upper chest and narrow the shoulders on DD's jackets, her upper arm and biceps are larger than a size 6 petite pattern. She needs several inches of wearing ease in the width of the sleeve.
The jacket that I am working on now has the size 8 armhole curve, squared shoulder, and a size 10 sleeve. I learned that I needed to compare the measurement of the length of the sleeve cap to the length of the armhole. The sleeve should only have a small amount of ease. I hope it fits DD even better than the last one.
