Re: Armhole /facing a lined, sleveeless dress (posted on 10/7/06 9:45 AM ET)
Hi All,
I'm not sure if this was the right board. Sorry if it's not and feel free to point me to the right one.
I'm working on this dress . In a nice gray with a black plaid band. Very cute.
The pattern calls for inserting the lining and then adding the sleeve. Not only did the sleeve turn out to small in my fitting (I have almost manishly muscular arms considering the only things I ever lift are Mountain Dew and pizza), but I realized I liked it much better sleeveless.
So, the dress is sewn at the shoulders, side seams and the lining in and understiched and NOW I want to make it sleeveless. Sigh.
I think I need to baste the lining to the armhole, make some bias strips and use that to take up the lining too. Right? Maybe? HELP!
I'd prefer the bias not to show, but I realize at this point that beggars can't be choosers.
I should also say that I've also got hem tape around the armhole to prevent stretching.
Any advice hepful. The dress just taunts me now from the dressform.

Hi Cidell,
Yes you can baste the lining to the armhole and use bias strips , or you could make a pattern from tracing the armhole shape and use that pattern for a facing pattern, the wide for the facing can be from 1 to 1,5 inch. If you attach the shoulder front and back together from the paper pattern you can sew that armhole facing without a shoulder seam. See example neckline facing without shoulder seam
It is best to interface the facing and finish the raw edge. Sew the facing at the side seams and sew it to the armhole, clip and grade the seam allowance and press towards the inside of the dress. Hand stitch the facing outeredge at the lining.

It took me almost a month, but I just made the facing and it totally worked!! I made the facing, understiched, and graded. It's excellant. The only problem was it's a little wide so I'm going to trim it so it doesn't show in the neck. THANK YOU for saving my dress!!

Congrats!
That's a great-looking dress.
Can you post a pic and a review when it's all done?

I am going for a level of perfection that is only mine... Most of the pleasure is in getting that last little piece perfect...Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just keep showing up and doing the work.

Els,
Thank you so much for suggesting a facing without a shoulder seam. I have been sewing for 30 plus years and I can't believe that this never occurred to me. I can't believe that I never read to try this. I hate the double shoulder seam thickness when attaching a facing at the neck or armhole! I am going to my patterns to choose something that I can try this on!
