what to use?? (Moderated by Deepika)

I have several magazine and pattern books w/master patterns that you're suppose to trace out. My question is what is a good inexpensive product to trace out on.
I've heard of using soil seperator lining and wondered how it held up.

Umm...I was told there would be no math on this exam.

I just bought this tracing paper from Nancy's Notions, but I haven't used it yet.

Soil separator paper? We are in the nursery business--never heard of that.
I use paper roll that is really tough I get from Cynthia Guffey.com. It is pretty tough and has a ton on a roll. I just got a new roll this fall after two years and I used it a lot. I redraft almost all my kids clothes. I think it was $20, but it is good stuff.
I bookmarked upstairs a place someone here recommended and that was for medical exam paper. I will go upstairs and see if I can find it for you. It was pretty cheap, but I had already ordered from Guffey.

I use PatternEase which I buy at Joanns in bulk. It is 1.69 a yard but I wait and use a 40% coupon and get a bolt. I do a lot of tracing off with the type of sewing I do. Patten Ease is 60 inches wide and tough. It can be sewn and drapes. I like that it is so readily available and inexpensive too.

I like patternease too, but it's $1.99/yd at my JA's. Even with the coupon it's 3 times as much as the septic liner stuff. I was just curious if there was a cheap, sturdy option that I hadn't heard of. A lady on another board uses the plastic dropcloth from the painting section. I've heard of freezer paper too, but that seems like it would tear too easy. I have little ones and the few tracing I've done on "paper" ended up getting ripped and having to be retaped. I like something fabric like.

Oh, I made a mistake...I think it's called septic liner.

I used to use anything that was laying around -- including recycled packing paper. I tried the pattern tracing medium from Nancy's Notions -- it is like non woven interfacing without the glue and it is very good, particularly if you will be using the pattern multiple times, but it is cumbersome to fold and store. I just bought a roll of tracing paper from di## Blick (an art supply internet store) and I love it ...... it is very easy to see through, much tougher than regular pattern tissue or gift wrap tissue and easy to store. The cost of the paper is minor and good tracing paper makes the process much less frustrating.
I think Leslie in Austin mentioned a source of tracing paper that she uses .... look for her recent thread on unusual notions.

2012 : starting stash 386, net additions 206, used 164, ending stash 428...I'm never going to get in front of this pile of fabric!

I use the same papaer Nancy2001 uses. It's transparent enough to see the lines you need to trace. It's heavier than the brown tissue you find in the big-4 patterns, so it tears much less readily. And it's lighter than the Kwik-Sew paper, which makes it much easier to use when pin-fitting. I also like that it comes in 70 foot rolls which, means I always have some around when I need it.

I like Swedish Tracing Paper (STP). It can be found at several online sites (I think Birch Street is the main supplier). It comes on a roll (29" x 10 yds) and is approx $11. I usually buy mine through an internet co-op at about 1/2 the price.

Does the tracing paper wrinkle? I like the non-woven interfacing-type stuff since it doesn't.
I recently used up my Kwik Trace and am now using Pattern Ease, which I like less since it's thicker and more fussy to fold. I bought some dropcloth plastic when it was on sale at the home store, but I haven't tried it yet.
