Are they closing? (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

A few weeks ago a discussion was held about Wal-Mart closing their fabric sections. I guess they are. Anyway a salesperson in Wal-Mart said that JoAnn's was also closing. All of them. (This is in Connecticut) I didn't pay too much attention, but I just found out that a Torrington, CT JoAnn's is closing 4/1/07 and I received a notice from Viking that they were not renewing their lease at JoAnn's and were closing their section of the store on 4/1/07 in Wat6erbiury, CT. I wonder if the JoAnn's portion will also close. A Hancock's in Manchester, CT had also closed. It is getting so that needles and thread will have to be purchased via the internet. Connecticut has so few places to go as it is. I am not a big fan of JoAnn's fabric. but for notions I at least had a place to go. Has any one else heard about JoAnn's closing stores? Appreciate any info any one may have.

I would be shocked if they do. All we have here is Walmart and JoAnn's. I am in a rural county in Oregon.
I know our Walmart is NOT closing. We are in a rural area and all we have is Walmart and JoAnn's. The ladies in the WM fabric dept said that the stores in larger metro areas are the ones closing those depts. They said it is because the customers have so many more choices in larger areas that WM fabric depts don't get much business. In rural areas like mine, WM gets alot of business so they aren't closing here.

My local JoAnn's is closing. Don't know about the one that's a little further away, though. There goes my emergency notion source!

There's a new Joann's set to open in North Austin just next month, so I'm pretty seriously dubious of this rumor. On the other hand this new Austin store would lend credence to another rumor I've heard that they're doing some consolidating of smaller stores into larger Joann Etc. super centers.
Takes a little digging but you can keep up with what's going on with the company on the Joann.com website under "investor relations".

All the Joann's closed around here a couple of years ago. They then opened a Joann's Etc. in a localized location. Meaning...close to the mall. I bet that's what they will be doing where you are too. I go there less now that the store is 30 min. away instead of 15.

Well, they're closing "my" Hancock store, and boy-o-boy am I pi**ed! I'll still have the local indie store in a fairly convenient location, but 4 Joanns and one remaining Hancock's are all a 35-45 minute drive, one way. I'm doing the math now, thinking that maybe I can afford more than one NYC trip a year if there are no fabric stores between work and home. Imagine the money I'll save!

They closed 2 of our smaller Joann's but opened 1 superstore. It's in a newly developed retail strip.

The JoAnn's near me is a JoAnn Etc., which I guess is what they cal their superstores. The parking lot is always packed, and the lines are long, especially on week-ends, so I'd be really surprised if it closed.

Not the one at Howell Branch and 436, I hope. In the Casselberry area. Karla, pardon me if my geography is a little off, I'm only a visitor. But there's a shopping center with SteinMart, Ross, and Hancock's. In other words, a trifecta of diversions.
