Substitution for silk jersey (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)
Posted on: 2/16/07 9:15 PM ET
I want to make a dress that calls for silk jersey. Does anybody have any idea where I can (1) find silk jersey that won't require me selling my first born, or (2) a good substitution?

Check out the bamboo jersey at Hancocks.
Edited to add that it is very light weight but gorgeous

I'm not sure I'd make a dress from bamboo jersey; it's a bit light weight... Poly or blend jersey would be nice - lucysfabrics.com has some nice looking ones.

I've bought some black bamboo knit at www.wazoodle.com, and it has the weight of good cotton knit, but is drapier. It is not sheer, by any means. Has that "cool" hand that rayon knit has.

I made my daughter a dress from some silk jersey a few years ago and it had a nice weight to it. Same thing when I was looking at some DVF rtw dresses. It didn't have a lot of stretch, but I think that the closest in feel is the rayon lycra that Emmaonesock sells. If you want a print she just posted some beautiful ones in different contents that would could be used instead of silk jeresey.
