suddenly stopped doing zig zag & overedge stitches (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)

I was nearing the end of a project when my beloved 19153 stopped doing the zig zag part of the overedge stitch. I've tried all the usual culprits (changed the needle, rethreaded, changed the bobbin, took everything apart and cleaned) but nothing seems to work.
I'm not sure how to explain it, but the machine makes the zig zag motion but only produces a straight stitch. Watching it move, it looks like the top thread is not picking up the bobbin thread to form the zig zag. It works for a straight stitch, but that is about it. The manual doesn't mention this in the troubleshooting section, and I haven't been able to find anything that specifically addresses this problem on the internet.
I downloaded some timing diagrams from sewusa.com, but haven't tried them yet. As the diagrams are for a Singer I'm not sure that they will help. Does anyone have any other suggestions before I entrust my poor baby to a stranger?
Thanks!
Patricia

I would suspect that it is a timing issue as well. Perhaps a trip to the shop is in order?

If the machine works ok for a straight stitch I am wondering if it could be something other than the timing. I don't know your model but years ago I had a machine where a little lever broke that moved the zig zag funtion. It was an easy fix. Maybe that is all that is wrong with your machine.

I have personally encountered machines that did a straight stitch ok on most fabrics, but the hook timing was off just enough that it would only stitch one side of the zig-zag stitch.
Once the hook timng was adjusted, everything was good again.
Since this is a newer, computerized machine that we are talking about, I would hesitate to make such an adjustment myself, unless I was really ready to accept the possible outcome of failure and be ok with that. I don't like to mess with computerized machines myself.
According to the description of the problem, the needle bar is swinging swing side to side when it is set to do a zig-zag stitch. So, this really makes me suspect a hook timing issue.
Klynne, you may be thinking about needle depth timing, which I agree is probably not the culprit in this case. The needle has to go down to the right point (needle depth), and the hook needs to be at the right point in its rotation (hook timing) for a stitch to form properly. I feel the latter is more likely the problem.
The hook timing could easily be within an acceptable range to form a stitch on one side of the zig-zag, but just advanced or retarded enough to not pick up the other side. Also, if the hook timing isn't completely wacked out, it will still be close enough to make a straight stitch most of the time. I've seen it happen.

Jenny knows far more than I about timing issues and actually, I didn't check this model out and didn't realize it is a computerized model and don't think it has the feature that my machine had that broke I posted about earlier. Being it is a computerized model, I would just take it in for a repair check.
