How likely is using a universal needle instead of a ball point needle going to be the cause of the automatic button hole thingie on my machine skipping stitches?

A dull needle is more likely the cause of skipped stitches *unless* you are sewing a knit fabric with a universal needle (in which case, you should switch to a ball point needle).
If you are making buttonholes on a knit fabric you'll want to make sure to stabilize the area with a good interfacing.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that it was knit. It was a pretty beefy knit too.

you also are going to want some water-soluable stabilizer on top.

Some knits stitch better with an universal point (wich is actually a slightly rounded sharp), some do better with a ball point (rounded tip) and still others stitch best with a stretch needle which has a special scarf design that helps prevent skipped stitches on difficult, stretch fabrics. I usually do afew test runs on scraps.
