My wife's using a Husqvarna Designer 1 (not the USB version) to embroider a pattern. It works for a while, but then the needle gets caught in the bobbin spool and bunches all the thread together at the bottom (underneath the fabric) and under the silver plate (I can't remember what that's called). We took it in for a service (we'd had it for quite a while without a service), and he said he balanced the top and bottom tension, removed lint buildup, and did something else I can't read. Has anyone ever had this problem? How'd you resolve it? Thanks very much.

Is the thread staying threaded properly on top? Embroidery thread is slippery and sometimes jumps out of the take-up lever, and will cause the problems you describe. If that is happening, try a thread net over the spool.

It does not appear to be unthreading at the top. I took out the bobbin spool and just turned the knob on the right (to feed thread and get the needle moving). When I do that, the thread gets caught in the little well where the bobbin spool sits. Specifically, as the needle comes down into that well, that well is spinning, and at the lowest needle point, the thread catches on one of the cut out areas in the bobbin well. To me it looks like it's a timing problem -- that the cut out area could be on the other side of the well when the needle's at the lowest point. But maybe with fabric in there, the tension on the thread would keep it out of that well. Any ideas? Thanks again.

Check to make sure the needle is inserted properly. If it's not seated all the way in, it can throw off the timing.

BTW here's a little hint for diagnosing thread problems: if the problem shows up UNDER the fabric (i.e. the bobbin side), then the problem exists OVER the fabric (i.e. the needle side), and vice versa.

Nope, sorry, the needle's inserted completely and correctly. I think we're going to take it back to the shop and see if they can figure it out.
