last decision re kitchen re-model! (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

Ok, i must say we have chosen granite for our counter-tops but am conflicted by some of the new sinks with the shallow right-side. I would prefer black porcelain but was told over time, it does scratch and that stainless is better. So, i'm going w/ stainless but unsure whether the under-mount is a wise course given that it can not easily be replaced down the road if need arises. ergonomics of under-mount are great w/ no lip to contend with but i tend to prefer 2 equal sides and the top-mount. The fridge discussion was so great, I wanted to hear thoughts on sinks to match! lol TIA!

I like the undermount sinks...I have decided my next sink will be one large basin, no divider. I just had a party and found it difficult to wash large platters, etc. Even a large pasta pot is difficult to wash in divided sinks. I really never use the "vegetable" prep side (the small side).
good luck, the granite sounds wonderful.

I have a sink and a half with an attached drainboard. One side is large and deep, the other about half the size and shallow. I love having the attached drainboard yoo.
I also have a goose neck faucet, which makes filling big pots easy.
I do not have any problem cleaning large items in the sink. My stock pot fits and I always presoak lasgane pans etc.

It is a top mount and the drain board is inset to the counter. You can choose to have the drain board on either the right or left.
I always have large pots and other dishes that do not go into the dishwasher, my old drain board/rack was always out. I think this looks much nicer, it is easy to keep clean etc. It is also great when I have to clean fish, cut large juicy things (watermelon), need a place to put hot pots etc.

We now have our second undermount sink with granite and have been very happy with it. As far as rekplacement needs: we've been told that with undermount sinks you need to use a seriously string stainless steel-- much stronger than is typical for kitchens. Our sinks seem so much stronger than the typical, I can't imagine ever needing to replace them! I wouldn't let that be a huge concern for you.
We have a big sink on one side, slightly smaller on the other, and a little bitty prep sink in the very middle with the garbage disposer in it. My DH despises this set-up. I have grown to like it, b/c you can have dirties in the deep side, use the medium side, and still have the garbage disposer available to you. But I'm notoriously non-picky on stuff like this.

I have an undermount stainless, and it's been great. Well, except for that time when it came unglued from the counter.
That was right after installation and it was a quick fix -- once they got out here. It's been fine ever since.
Mine has a HUGE, deep left sink and a regular sized right sink. The one on the right really is a regular-sized sink, like you'd see in the average double sinks. That's how big the other side is. No problem with deep, big pots, platters, whatever. I even wash the dog in it.

I have a stainless sink in the bathroom. I would never put in a stainless again - it never looks clean and is ALWAYS water spotted. However, that may just be our water (not the best, very alkaline) and the fact that it's in the bathroom (soap, toothpaste, etc.).
We have a black toilet in the same bathroom and I love it - no toilet rings and the water spotting is not a problem on black! My brother had a dark red (porcelain) sink in his kitchen for almost 20 years and it never scratched.

My DH, who owns a plumbing company, says there are many grades of porcelain sinks. The high-end ones don't scratch and the low-end ones scratch & stain immediately. That being said, my preference is stainless steel.

I have a stainless sink undermounted in my granite counter top. We were advised to spend serious money on a very heavy guage stainless steel so we did and I have not regretted it. I am not a fanatic about water spots (my old porceline sink was pitted, stained and chipped and I hated it) but find a little scrubbing and some mineral oil shines it up just fine. I have a seriously deep and wide main sink with a small sink for the disposal. I went with this style because I had limited space and wanted access to my disposal while the roasting pan is soaking. I'm perfectly happy with my choice.
