Hi there! I'm new here and need some help!
I need to add a slot seam with a fabric inlay to jacket sleeve and I'm not sure how to do it. I've done some research online and this was the best I could find:
http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/cr_clothing/article/0,2025,DIY_13751_2313191,00.html
However, it doesn't make sense to me - why do you need to baste where the slot seam with be? Is it just for marking purposes? Is it to get a fold of fabric, like piping? Can't you just sew the inlay to the seam allowances of the sleeve?
If anyone can point me to a better step-by-step describtion, I would really appreciate it.
TIA!
Holly

Kenneth King did an online class here fairly recently, on slot seam construction, and the class downloads and instructions were incredibly detailed. You might try contacting Deepika to see if you can buy the class after the fact - don't know if she archives things like that or not.
Or you might check out some of the Kenneth King resources- he's got a great line of books and videos.

Thanks - I was kind of looking for something free and immediate. I have to finish draping this jacket and make the pattern before this Saturday (going to school for fashion design).

How about checking out this review by Gorgeous Things. She uses the slotted seam in her skirt. I used her techniques in my jean jacket with success. Very easy to understand instructions and pictures as well.

Like Miss Frizzle says "Take chances, make mistakes ..." isn't that what fitting is all about? I am happily taking chances and making mistakes as I fit muslin after muslin ...

Cool! Thanks so much! One more question - the slot I need to make is 1/2" wide - the instructions mention basting the original seams together, then basting the inlay ontop, then removing the basting - so it seems like just a little bit of the inlay will show through - and I need a whole 1/2" to show. I guess the link in my first post was really doing the same thing with the basting. So I'm thinking I can just make the stip 1/2" + seam allowances on each side, and stitch the seam allowances from either side of the slot to each seam allowance of the inlay? Does that sound right? I could test it out myself, but am hoping someone could confirm this for me first (and possibly avoid any hair-tearing!).
Thanks again!

Unfortunately the link to the slotted seam instructions in Gorgeous Things' review no longer works.
I wasn't able to find them at the new blog location, but if you searched a little harder, you might have better luck. You could also PM Gorgeous Things and ask her to send or post a link.

Actually Irina, it does, sort of.
TheSewingDivas August archival folder scroll to the entry Aug 24.
It's great that she's got that out there as a tutorial. I felt like I really couldn't pass on info that was paid for here as a copyrighted class - I hope you understand that.

Marji -- You must have looked a little harder than I did -- thanks for posting the direct link. When the link didn't go straight to the tutorial, I gave up. After Lorna mentioned it, I remembered reading Ann's review back when she first did it and looking at the tutorial then. Hopefully, this information will be helpful to hlk_couture.

Threads #75, Feb/Mar 98, has an article on slot seams. I was just looking at it the other day!

Hi ladies,
Thanks for all the searching! Yep, that's what I was looking at - but it seems to me that the info there is just for a very small slot seam - just a hint of the inlay fabric shows through. Because I need a solid 1/2" to show, I don't think I would do it the same way.
I'll try it out tonight and see what happens!
Thanks again!
