First, read the reviews here at PatternReview. This will give you an idea of what the different brands and models provide.
(1) Make a list of some of the items you would like to embroider.
(2) Make a list of options, in the order of your preference, of the ways to obtain designs: downloads from the Internet, make your own, or from purchased design cards formatted for the brand of machine you have.
(3) Make of list of things you would like the machine to do: auto thread cut, auto threading, low bobbin reminder, optional hoop sizes, design editing, etc.
(4) Take 1-2-& 3 with you when you "Audition the Dealers" and test their wares! Ask if: they provide lessons on operating the machine & optional software classes to learn the craft and if you can come back and talk with them before you decide which brand/model you wish to purchase.
(5) Unless price is no option, compare the brands to see which offers the most in the way of software or options. If price is an option, then let the dealer know this at the beginning so they can help you in your choice.
(6) Make your final choice by the brand you like the best, offered by the dealer you like the best.
Home Machine Embroidery is great medium with instant gratification!
PS: Buy from a reputable dealer. Some individuals have had good luck buying from places like ebay, and others have not....
