I have heard on the news twice this week about a new study (or lack of studies by the product companies) on the sunscreens that are combined with DEET (bug repellent). On the local Chicago news, a doctor from Rush University Medical Center said that she did not recommend the combo sunscreens as they have not been tested and there is concern about the amount of DEET being applied.

She said to apply the two products separately, one before the other, but I forget which goes on first. I think the sunscreen goes on first. Wait 30 minutes to apply any bug repellent.

My DH just caught on to this and had us revamp our suncreen supply - especially the suncreen we use on our toddler.

None of the 17 recommended brands are available in Canada as far as I know. And they do not list the brands tested.

I wonder though in what way are they no good? I am a red head and know that if I use sunscreen I do not get a sun burn. I still avoid too much direct sun exposure and the kids (redheads too) wear sun suits at the beach.

As a general rule of thumb, physical sunscreens are better- titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. ( I found this out last summer and autumn, when diagnosed and treated for basal cell skin cancer.)

Michele, click on the link in the article. At least two of these products- Badger and the Aubery Organics are easily found in Health food stores.

After I posted here, I did a more thorough read of the additional literature accompanying the article. It seems that if a company uses ingredients that have not been thoroughly researched and officially blessed as safe, they raise the safety issue. Does that mean the product is not safe? That's a good question.
