My daughter is in the Peace Corps in Armenia and bought this heavy iron hand crank machine. I think she said it was a Singer, but I can't tell from the picture she sent. Can anyone identify what model it is from the picture? I need to know if it is worth bringing back when she returns to the states in 2 years.

Sorry, I can't get the photo to upload in my Photo Album. I'll keep trying.

I cannot see the photo.

There is a vintage singer group at Yahoo, which may be able to help identify the machine. They helped me to identify a vintage singer I recently came aross.

Vintage Singers

One thought, perhaps it would be better for her to donate the machine to a woman's group in Armenia where it could make a huge difference in the quality of a local's life, then to bring it back as a novelty?

After seeing the photo posted here of the lady in Ghana with a vintage Singer balanced on her head, I have thought twice about keeping the one I found. I have friends who make regular trips to Africa to work with NGOs and I may see if they can take this one with them next time. I have 3 working sewing machines, a serger and coverpro, one more machine will not make any difference to my ability to sew. Yet that same machine could provide an income to a woman in Africa.

Michelle, FYI, the lady in Ghana didn't appear to have a "vintage" Singer on her head.

Based on what I saw, the decals where much too garish to be the "real deal" as far as vintage machines go. The color and style of the decals match perfectly with the Chinese made, reproduction Singers. Still usable for sewing, but not of the same quality as the genuine, vintage Singers made in North America or Europe. Many of these reproduction machines are sold in these countries like Ghana. They are also sold in the USA and often misrepresented by the seller.

ETA: this just mentioned for reference and educational info only.

Thank you for the information and link. My daughter bought this to use while she is living there since electricity is not always available.

As a clarification, she wasn't planning on bringing it back as a novelty, but as a thoughtful gesture from a loving daughter to her mother. I do not own 3 machines. She knew I always wanted a vintage machine and was wondering if I would like to have it when she was done with her duties.

While I see your point about giving the machine away, she is contributing much more in her chosen profession. She ran an international not-for-profit organization in Dublin for youth development and has chosen to volunteer for the Peace Corps for the next 27 months. She is a wonderful giving daughter and person.
