how to do the hems (Moderated by EleanorSews)
Posted on: 9/2/07 11:06 AM ET
Hi ~ I posted this on the Fabric Board too. I am making microsuede drapes for my room and would like any tips on a clean finish for the hems and sides. I have very little experience maching sewing and would like to know if microsuede follows any different rules than "regular" fabric"? Thanks.

Ultrasuede and similar high quality fabrics don't ravel, so you can leave a cut edge raw. If you want it more finished you can do a decorative stitch or sew on a trim. Hemming is a problem because pressing is tricky. It doesn't press well and you end up with marks or even melting.
Why don't you drape your fabric over the rod and leave the end where you'd like the drapes to end. See if you are OK with the edge as is and how it wears if you pull your drapes open and closed every day. If you have enough yardage you can cut a length equal to what you need plus top and bottom allowances and drape that. Otherwise support the bundle of fabric on furniture and just hang one end over.

For the sides, I would fold and press 1/2", tuck that fold in 1/2" again and topstitch in place. I haven't had any problems ironing microsuede as long as I used a pressing cloth (large enough muslin scrap). For the hems, I would do the same but with a deeper depth.

I used this fabric for drapery panels in my family room. I made them the traditional way and then used rings to hang them from rods that coordinated with the rest of the room.
The room gets so much light from the rest of the house that I never open the ones on the windows and leave the ones on the french doors open. Enclosed blinds on the windows of the doors can be positioned for light or dark, so the panels are seldom closed.
