I have let down the hems but now I have a lin of darker colour around the bottom. As there any way I can lighten the denim so the let down mark isn't so obvious?

You could try painting a bleach/water mixture on the darker part, to lighten it. Be sure to rinse really well in lots of water afterwards. I'm surprised there isn't a line of fabric that's too light also.

The way most people fix this problem [cuz it always happens on jeans], is to sew some sort of trim over that area. Beading, sequins, fabric paint, embroidery, and glue-on crystals/studs [with the Kandy Kane tool] can hide it too.

HTH :)

In addition to a bleach solution, you can also lightly sand the area with a fine-grain sandpaper. That will help even out the textures of the fabric.

Cute pic, Ann. I got myself and DS Simpsonized too. We both laughed so hard.
