DH "gifted" me with an industrial serger (Brother) that was being scrapped out at his work. I have a perfectly fine, very new household serger that I love. My question to all of you, what would I want to sew on the industrial machine rather than the home machine?

If you want to sew really fast and sew all day, every day, then an industrial serger would be the way to go. They can handle the constant usage and will speed up production due to their high speed.

OMG, you are so lucky! I am lusting after a used Brother industrial serger. They sell for about $1200, so that was a nice gift from your bro. The Brother industrials are top notch. You'll get much better stitch consistency than on any home machine, and they will sew through anything. How many threads does yours have? I'm so jealous!

ETA: Gigi has a whole herd of industrials. She's got great information on her blog and on The Sewing Divas about industrial machines.

Heavy, thick fabrics are appropriate for an industrial machine. Such as denim waistbands, purses, etc.

The motor/transformer on home sewing machines can blow out with this type of sewing. (Ask me how I know...)

Not all industrial machines are designed for heavy fabrics. They are often very specialized in the type of fabric and sewing that they will do. For example, some are made to sew shirt weight fabrics only, but do it all day, every day. - Some only sew on buttons, some close bags, some only make belt loops, etc...

In order to know what fabrics are approriate for a given machine, it's best to consult with an expert within the industrial sewng machine field.
