using stretch wovens (Moderated by Deepika)

I am making a pair of pants using Burda magazine 5/07 #112 using a stretch woven fabric. For the waistband, should I cut it with the stretch going across or vertical? I cut it with the stretch going across, now I am wondering if this will be a disaster. I also interfaced it with tricot and stretching in the same across plane as well. My initial thought was as long as I stabilize the top edge with twill tape, it won't bag and fall down and the stretchiness will be useful for days the stomach is a little larger than others... Any thoughts appreciated.

I think it's personal preference but I prefer the waistband/yoke cut on the lengthwise grain, with the stretch running down the waistband. The few times I've cut the other way I didn't like it, even with tape in the seam. The waistband/yoke had too much give and by the end of the day I was cursing my pants. I like a waistband/yoke that holds in my stomach and acts like a girdle.
I have a pair on today in the same style where the yoke is cut with the stretch running down. I love these pants!

Thanks Belinda for sharing your expertise on your grainline preference for a waistband/yoke. I just cut out a lightweight denim pair of pants today with a contoured waistband, so they're on the bias. I think I've read a review by you on pants with contoured waistbands, what do you use to interface the WB?

I have had the same experience. Definitely don't sew with stretch across the pant. A lot of people don't realize that the grain on a contour waist can be changed.
