My shower stall is about 20 years old and the clear plastic bead (not the silicone caulking, although it is gross, too) that runs between the metal rails and the glass is completely disgusting and mouldy looking. It was that way when we moved in and has just got worse over time. Frankly, if it was in someone else's shower, I wouldn't set foot in it! Thank goodness it is in the en suite, where no visitors ever go!

Is this stuff standard issue and available at a plumbing place or is it one of those things that they make different for every model of shower stall? I have taken it out to clean, but there is no way. It is right into the plastic now. I can't afford to redo my bathrooms right now!

Have you tried X-14 or CLR? X-14 will kill the mold ... it says spray it on and let it sit before rinsing. You might need to give the shower a couple of treatments to get rid of the mold.

CLR is the best stuff I have found to get rid of hard water deposits, soap scum and the general ick that builds up in a shower. The directions say to dilute the product and apply but I just put it in a spray bottle full strength and spray it on. Multiple applications of this one might be needed.

Good luck and be careful these are powerful chemicals so keep a window open.

Could you possibly just remove the doors completely and replace with a shower curtain?

I've had those "slightly old" showers before also. All the cleaning in the world doesn't seem to help...

I brought in a very good handyman who pulled all the old caulking out and re-caulked. They can do the same with grout around tiles.

I find the biggest challenge is with the shower floors. The acrylic gets scratched and impossible to clean years after being installed.

The good old showers had porcelain beds...those look great at any age if not scratched.

You can spend lots of money and get a new shower floor installed. They can put a "liner" over your old floor.

I'd get a quote on completely rebuilding the shower...and then a quote for liner installation.

Is this what you mean?

Thanks everyone. No, the CLR (great as it is) won't get into the plastic. It is black in places all the way through. It is a tiny corner shower so a curtain won't work, though in a nice, fully tiled bathroom, I can see how that would be nice. The truth is that both bathrooms need to be completely redone...and the kitchen, and the spare bedrooms, and the deck... Just one big lottery win and we'll be there! If only I actually bought tickets
