So I am finishing up my first quilt project I originally mentioned here. ( I promise to post a pic once it is done).
I have gotten it all pieced together, I safety pin basted the sandwich, and have done a 1/4" in the ditch quilting.
I would like to do a little simple decorative quilting (?) in the middle patch. I have looked everywhere and searched google and cannot for the life of me find any stencil, guideline, etc that I can use.
I know as I go along I am going to want to do something more involved than in the ditch.
Any advice? I can find block diagrams and patterns for days, but the actual quilting I can find almost nothing.
Thanks,
Alex

Try doing a search for "quilting designs".
Here's one link:

Most fabric stores have a quilt section where they display stencils.
I found one that I liked for a western themed quilt at Hobby Lobby. I did not stencil and stitch though, I put the design on paper then using embroidery software, digitized it so I could use my embroidery machine.....much more steady than my hand could guide a needle around a stenciled pattern.
PS: I have used quilt designs from quilting magazines by copying them onto "Golden Threads Quilting Paper". You can find pre-printed designs on quilting paper at http://www.clotilde.com

Xander,
I enjoy using the pictures from kid's coloring books for quilt stencils. Really good for simple lines and baby quilts.

Hi xander,
I am not sure what is in the block you want to add a design to, but you can do what is called Echo Quilting. That is a 14 " repeat around and around a design. It gives a repeat pattern of whatever the original shape is put in the middle of the block over and over. If there is nothing in the block, you could put a shape there that is simple and compliments your quilt top design. Say, if you have say horses on your fabric, you could add a outline of a horseshoe or a barn. See what I mean? Then you copy the outline 1/4 inch away from the design out to the edge which would fill in the block. Even a simple square would be something that would work.
There are classes on machine quilting, check around to see what is available in your area. Community extentions or private quilt store classes are some places to look. Or, perhaps you could check out a book on the subject from the local library. If you are good at learning on your own. I am pretty sure the public library would be on-line to check what titles are available for checkout and to reserve one til you get there to check it out.
Good luck with your quilting. I am sure you are going to really get lots of enjoyment out of your first quilt. I remember I did. I admire you finishing it up right away. I have many tops that need to be quilted that are pretty old. My plan is to take a long arm quilting class at my local quilt shop when I finish the month to month one I am currently working on.
Happy sewing!

Re: Quilting Paper (posted on 5/2/08 6:56 AM ET)
I am getting ready to buy some quilting paper from Golden Threads to try as I heard it is easier to use then marking the quilt. Should I buy the adhesive dots too or does it stay in place relatively easy with straight pins?
