I've posted this as well to my Brother Yahoo group, but I thought I'd throw it out here too, as I don't think it's all machine related!
1. My computer is reading my PED box as some sort of SimCity device! When I double click it on My Computer, it shows little sewing machine icons with SimCity names attached. No one in my house plays this game, but I do think I have some old files on the hard drive. On properties it says file may be corrupted, or is not an embroidery file. Rebooting, unplugging the device and starting over does not help. But, in the PED program, my card shows and I can write to it!
2. I bought some alphabets from ebay (reputable seller), and stitched out a couple of names I made in Embird. Now this font won't work at all. Creates fine in embird, the sewing data is there. When I go to PED and open the folder to add it to my PED to write to the card, it shows me *no sewing data found*. I guess the whole entire font got corrupted?
3. Finally, I bought a design from EL, and thankfully I downloaded the color sheet from there. Embird and my machine want to give me totally wonky colors for this design. It did stitch out okay, though.
Weirdness prevails, and I have no idea what to do about any of it.

I can't help with anything but #3. That's just normal for EL. Their designs are formatted for commercial machines which read the colors differently so they'll always look ugly in our home software/readers. That's one reason they do offer the color sheets.

OK ... giving the others a shot ...

For #1 ... it's probably because Windows isn't recognizing the device or driver properly. How to fix? I dunno w/o being there in front of it. I'm really bad at long-distance troubleshooting. As long as it's working, I wouldn't worry a whole lot.

#2, the file must be OK if it's working in Embird. Embird can create 2 files when saving. One is the embroidery file and the other is the Embird workspace (data) file. Be sure you are saving as the correct type and then also trying to load the correct file into PED. Do you have file extensions showing when you look at your files in (Windows, not IE) Explorer? Pick the one with the embroidery extension.

Thanks, Debbie. Yes, I'm saving it as a .pes file. It's weird cause it will let me transfer say just a J from that alphabet to my PED card. But, if I combine that J with anything else, be it from that same alphabet, or another pes graphic file, embird saves it all nice but PED won't recognize it.

ITA with Debbie Cook. This happened to me, too, and my Bernina group said it's due to EL digitizing in DST format, etc. and to just assign colors of our own choosing, as close to the Color Chart that we print out with the design from the website.

My first download from EL was FSL snowflake ornaments. They all came up bright grass green in the computer and machine's screens! Freaked me out. The group's experienced response calmed me down. Isn't the internet wonderful?

If I remember correctly I had the same problem as #2 when I combined letters for a monogram in Embird and tried to write to my card with PED. I had chosen the wrong hoop size in Embird. One is a Brother large and one is for Innovis. I can't remember which was the correct one. But just try saving with one of the other hoops and see what happens.

I'm going to take a whack at this problem. Most likely, when the old SimCity game was installed, it assigned any file with a .DAT extension to its program. You can try to uninstall this program if you haven't already (go to Add/Remove Program in Control Panel, and select the program to uninstall.)

If that doesn't work, you can reassign the extension to Embird. To do that, go to Control Panel and click on "Folder Options". From there, click on the "File Types" tab and scroll down to the .DAT entry. Click on that. Click on the "Change" button. That will open a Window with a list of possible programs. Scroll down until you find Embird, click on it, make sure that the "Always use the selected program to open this type of file" is checked, and click "Okay". If Embird is not listed, you will need to click on the "Browse" button and navigate through the folders until you find it.

Hope that helps. If you need help, PM me and I will help the best I can. I do have a way of remote controlling someone's computer to help fix problems -- I used to own a computer repair business before our very recent move.

Patricia, I thought of that. I have the Innovis 1200 and have chosen that, as well as the large Brother hoop, and no luck with either. My hoop is 5x7, so really either one of those should work. Usually if it's too large a design, it will pop up in PED, but with a big red cross mark, or two yellow hoops, one outlined to indicate that I need to go vertical with the design.

Paula, thank you so much. I will try that with SimCity and see what happens. Thanks for your offer to help me via PM.

Just in case this will help anyone else, I tried Patricia's advice one more time and it worked. I guess I was using the Brother Innovis hoop option in Embird and what it was looking for was the Brother Large hoop. Now it shows! THanks, Patricia!
