I just want to confirm something: ( and I have Fit for real people)
1)If the front armhole binds;
this is a broad shoulder problem
2)and if the front arms bind on reaching forward;
this is a broad back problem
It is never that the armhole is too small?
3)if the armhole is jamming into your armpit (and the upper bust area is a correct fit) you would LOWER the armhole
So what is all this business about raising an armhole for any binding issues?
thanks

I do not have a broad back but do have problems with the front of the armhole binding and I have a forward shoulder. Doing a forward shoulder adjustment solves this problem. If you don't have pulls across the back then you probably do not have a broad back. The other problem that I have is a long arm joint and that causes binding below the arm. This can also be caused by sloping shoulders. It all depends on where your wrinkles are and where they point. Do a muslin and stare at yourself in the mirror. A lot.
Or take digital pics of yourself or have someone take them, particularly of the back. I find that wrinkles show up more visibly in a photo and you can study it a lot easier.

In addition to Nancy's help, it could also mean that the armhole is too low. Yep, you need to show us some photos so we can see.

I KNOW!! and after doing broad shoulder and broad back alterations, this is the conclusion I've come to! I'm too chicken to make the armholes bigger...... so, just carve them out and leave the sleeves alone? or make the sleeves bigger too?

If you lower the armhole, you have to lower the sleeve underarm the same amount. If you are having problems you should make a muslin and put in at least one sleeve, this can have the sas folded under and pinned in place, see can see a good demonstration in this months Threads mag. Sew it up and mark centers and buttonholes and if this is a jacket, pin together at cf and check your wrinkles. I often sew with BWOF, so I cut it out without cutting hems or facings so that I can see it at the finished length with less work. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and make a muslin.
