Are you taking care of yourself? (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

Winter holidays come with so much baggage to them. On the one hand there is all the work -- sewing gifts, decorating, shopping, cooking. On top of it is the difficult weather and 10,000 other people going about doing the same things (traffic, lines, cellphones, crying children, impatience, indifference) all the soundtrack of holiday music.
Also, lots of these people who are out there with us may also be going through some rough emotional stuff that the holidays bring-- that energy is put out there for us to absorb as well--ever come back from a simple errand totally drained?
So, cancel that afternoon party and make an appointment for a massage. Go get a reiki attunement, a hatha yoga class, something where there is quiet, where you can recharge, meditate, quiet the crazy making.
I cancelled an appointment today and went straight to the massage shop. Dina, a talented strong young woman wrestled mightily with the unbelievable knots I had in my shoulders. She also did some polarity therapy along my spine and I feel wonderful. I no longer default to clenched jaw (which was giving me headaches).

Be true to yourself. Push your boundaries. Do everything with love in your heart and a grin in your head. Move a little, eat good food, enjoy good health. Spread sunshine.

I want to get massage into my routine, however, I have never had one. What should I look for? Any good suggestions for a massage therapist in the Detroit area?

A massage sounds wonderful. I just finished painting my very wide hallway, which was a different color than the rest of the rooms it connected to. I had to move three bookcases full of books and also re-hang about 25 family photos after I sanded, primed and painted! I am sure I have several knots and lots of maladjusted ligaments after that humongous project.

I would advise that you get a massage and a chiropractic adjustment. I have learned that after all major painting jobs (I recently finished our hallway, stairwell and kitchen as well as scrubbed most of our hardwood floors by hand) it is essential to get adjusted and massaged.

It isn't spoiling yourself, I think of it more as my tune up, like my car. If I keep myself tuned up I perform better and save us money in the long run. (I don't think there is any real evidence for this. . .but it is the reasoning I use anyway!

I always set a limit to what I volunteer or get involved with. I say no. I don't believe in getting too stressed out during the holidays. I also make sure have at least one week off at Xmas (I'm self-employed).
I highly recommend getting an adjustment from a chiropractor. It will make your life much better if you suffer from back problems.

I had to visit the dermatologist today, and while I was there for a minor procedure, I was chatting away with him and the nurse. I told him how much I loved the results of the Finacea (sp?) he prescribed for my mild rosacea. My cheeks were so smooth w/such youthful-looking skin! So I asked him if he had anything else I could use like that on my entire face and he gave me some samples with a prescription for Retin-A.
So I'm looking forward to nice, smooth skin! That's why I did for myself today.

You might check with your doctor or ask wherever your doctor sends people for Physical Therapy.
I had a great one in Ann Arbor until she went into only doing prenatal. Sadly she recently passed away. Just a wonderful masseuse. Be sure the person is state board certified or licensed though.
Some chiropractic offices also have masseuses and that would be a good place to look into.
