serge corners? (Moderated by EleanorSews)
Posted on: 1/26/08 6:14 PM ET
I have corners in my project! It is currently sitting in the serger, needles down in the fabric, right at the corner. How do I turn it?
I did a search for "serge corner" but nothing came up, not sure what else to search.
Thanks!

Is this an outside corner? The easiest way to do this is to run the serger off the end of the fabric and finishing it with the method of your choice (i.e. run the thread chain back thru the stitching, etc.). Then you just treat the other side of the corner as a whole new seam.
You can also go just past the edge of the fabric, gently ease the threads off the foot, and pivot the fabric and reposition the needles going in the other direction.
It's a whole different game than regular sewing, isn't it!
It's so weird to have to stop and think of what you need to do at the beginning and end of every seam!

Yes, definitely different! I'd actually stopped on purpose with the needles in the fabric and lifted the foot before I realized I couldn't pivot like normal!
Thanks! I'll just run it off. I was just watching the Nancy's Notion serger video and she does it similar, but a little different. Run the first seam off the end and clip thread ends, then fold the corner of that seam in towards the body of the project and serge the other straight line right across that end and so on. I wonder if it gives a sharper corner to the finished project?

Yes, it does give a sharper corner. Use that exact technique all the time!
