I just noticed that I have been doing straight stitching and forgot to change the needle plate and presser foot back from the zigzag needle plate and presser foot. I haven't had any problems so I was wondering whether I can just leave them on. It would be nice to not have to change them back and forth all the time. (I have an old machine and it takes a couple minutes.)
I am sure there is a reason why this is a bad idea though... so I thought I'd turn to my trusty sewing advisors. Thanks!

You can leave the zigzag plate on with no problem. In fact, the only time I switch to the single hole plate on my machine is if I'm sewing on very fine, light fabric that might tend to get pulled into the larger hole of the zigzag plate. There are a few other times when you'll want the single hold plate but for the most part, you don't need it. In fact there are some machines that don't even have a single hold plate.

Thank you so much!! Well I am sewing an apron out of shirting material and it isn't too lightweight but I did notice that at one point it was pulling it into the hole and I figured that might be the reason.
And how about the presser foot. I still don't see the issues there.... except that the zig zag foot is wider. Maybe that makes it less manuverable?

Personally, I like having a variety of presser feet and I use them all. However, for most normal straight seam sewing I like my open toe applique foot rather than the ''normal'' foot. I like being able to see the needle and being able to guide it precisely where I want it to go. There are some specialty presser feet that are fantastic and I wouldn't want to sew without them. If you do a search here on the boards you'll find at least one topic on the subject of everybody's favorites and why.
Keep in mind that there are no sewing police! You will find what works best for you and whatever that is, is great! Don't be afraid though to try new things and a variety of techniques though. The more you learn, the more fun it is and the better you'll sew! Have fun!

PegL Thanks for your advice! I think that is a great point about being able to see the needle!
