Do I need software to get a pattern I purchased online from the computer to the machine? I can't get it out of my zip drive since there is no way to read it. I am guessing that in addition to my USB stick I also need software such as Embird. Is that correct?
My dealer told me I could get the pattern from the computer to the EM without software, but it isn't happening. Actually it is a longer story than that, I am trying to simplify my question.

I am not sure if Winzip will unzip the file or not, but once you save it on your harddrive, try unzipping with winzip. I think it will unzip but it won't read the image since you don't have a program that will read embroidery designs. All you have to do is download the unzipped file to your stick drive and walk it to your sewing machine. It will be able to read the file designation and you can see it then.
I do think you should have software though because if you need to make any ajustments to the item that are more sophisticated than your machine can handle, you will have no way of doing it.
Embird is great. If you you get it, make sure you buy Iconizer with it because it will allow you to see mini pics of what you download making it very easy to find the designs you want to use.
Hope this helps.

You should be able to easily transfer a downloaded file to your flashdrive without using something like Embird. You only need Embird if you want to edit.
Download the file and go to your download folder. Click on it to unzip it. Your embroidery machine cannot read a zipped file so you will have to unzip it. Your web browser will ask if you want to "save" or "cancel" (and some web browsers will ask if you want to "open" or "save"). Choose "save."
Your web browser will ask where you want to save the design. Choose your desktop, the floppy drive, or a folder on your computer -- wherever you normally save embroidery designs. I named my file "My Embroidery Designs and set up various folders such as baby, gardening, etc.) under that file.
Your web browser will ask you what you want to name the design. You can either keep the name (usually shows up as a file number) or you can change it to something else by typing over whatever is there.
To move files from my computer file to the flash drive, I go under edit, "select all" or the particular folder and then right click on the mouse and choose "send to" and in my case, my flash drive is "j" and I click on j and that's it.
I hope this is clear and that it works for you.

Your instructions are very good. Unfortunately it isn't working. I know it should be. I managed to get one transferred a couple weeks ago but have't managed to since then.
I had the 30 day trial of Embird on and the free pattern I purchased would show up in Embird but not transfer so I removed Embird and the pattern transferred fine.
Now I can't get any other patterns to transfer. I don't understand it. I need to get someone in my house who is good at computers.
Thanks for the responses!

If you have a laptop, take it to a local shop that has computer techs and tell them you are having a problem unzipping files. If they are not busy, they should look at your PC on the spot.
Don't leave the laptop. If they cannot show you how this works, free of charge, then try another shop.
We've also found students working in the electronics dept of our local Walmart to be knowledgeable and eager to help. This is not the norm - not all Walmart Stores are created equal.

From "my documents" or "my computer" find your zip file. If you are looking at your zip file, right click on it. Your computer should pop up a menu that gives options to unzip the file. Click on "extract files" or "extract here" and it should unzip the embroidery file into the directory that your zip file is in.
Good luck.

Hi Lorene: I'm no computer expert but I agree with all of the others - you should be able to unzip the file on your computer without embroidery software, save it to your computer or USB stick and find the file when you plug the stick into your embroidery machine. When I started using my USB stick, I had to format it in my embroidery machine and make sure I saved the file in the correct folder for my Janome machine. The only thing I haven't seen mentioned, but might be a problem, is making sure you purchased and downloaded the correct format for your machine. My Janome reads JEF files only. Did you download the correct format for your machine? Probably a silly point, but I've been know to download the wrong thing when I don't pay attention or get distracted.
Good Luck

Success!!
A good friend who is much better at computers helped me figure it out. I have to make sure the "My Design" Folder is in the "Emb5" folder and then transfer those to my USB stick. If the "My Design" folder is all that I transfer it does not work.
