There have been several threads here on the new Sapphires and it seems Viking definitely got something wrong with the re-design. The Designer 1 has a proven track-record and is 3x the machine plus gives you option of gorgeous, generously-sized embroideries. The automatic presser-foot lift is wonderful! I bought a used one almost a year ago and love everything about it.

If you have a Janome 6600, you don't need the Sapphire - the Janome has a better reputation right now, the large harp for quilts, and some features that the Sapphire doesn't have, like the separate motor for bobbin winding.

I'd go for the Designer 1.

Personally I would not even own a sapphire 870, it has some problems, most can be fixed by a service tech. But for me I would not want to buy a new machine with problems. I don't know what price you can get the designer 1 for, but most dealers offer them for about 999.00 used. You have the Janome 6600P, and so I would go for the designer 1 if it were me.

thats makes sense. my dealer is selling the used designer 1 for $1300. is that reasonable? do on-line dealers sell used machines?

I think that's a very good price.
