adding elastic to leg opening? (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)
Posted on: 4/17/08 0:42 AM ET
I'm using this pattern and I'm making the bodysuit view I - the pattern is for knit material, and I'm making the small size, the leg opening seems incredibly large (which I'm guessing the body suit is meant to have room for the bulk of a diaper) but I'm wondering if I wouldn't be able to use some elastic to decrease the the leg opening...thoughts?

The notions section does mention optional decorative elastic for views H & I, is there something in the directions pertaining to using it?

The instructions indicate to finish the leg edges w/ a 5/8" narrow hem or decorative elastic - from what I understand the elastic would then be showing on the edges.
I incorporated a slight change to the leg opening and rather just hem the legs, I used a bias tape treatment, w/ the intention of having the elastic run under the bias tape - where it would be enclosed.

I like to use a narrow piece of cotton ribbing to finish the leg openings and "draw in" some of the fullness, the same way you'd use ribbing on a tee shirt neck hole. To me, it just feels softer and more gentle than a bias tape casing and elastic on chubby little baby legs.

Like LouisaP, I use ribbing on the leg opening. I usually apply it as binding.
