My neighbor brought over his puffy winter jacket that he tore. It has an L-shaped tear under the arm. I can probably mend it by slipping some fabric through the tear, pinning it under, then handstitching the tear, but I think it would be better if I could fuse a patch on. There's no area on the jacket where I could test the iron out and I'm scared to death of melting the fabric! Advice? Thanks!

I wouldn't fuse and take the chance of melting the fabric.

In my experience nylon melts pretty easily.

Some nylon fabrics can be ironed at very low tempertures, but I don't think anything would fuse at that low of a temperature.
What about using some wonder-tape to hold your patch in place until you have it stitched? The wonder tape should hold it in position and allow you to pin and stitch the repair patch in place, then easily wash away after the repair is made.

Thanks so much. That's exactly what I figured would happen. I'll run to the store to find wonder-tape this afternoon! Thanks!

You can buy iron-on patches for nylon sleeping bags and tents at the camping stores. They are meant to be ironed on. I think the glue must be a low-temp melt.
