When buying fabrics online, I notice that sometimes the seller sell a designer fabric but won't mention the name. So you read things like 'Famous NY designer', or 'Sexy italian designer', or '7th Avenue's wildest designer', or 'Bxxxxxxy' or things like that. But, some other times, the name is clearly mentioned.

I'm just wondering why in some cases the sellers cannot mention the name of the designer, why it is such a secret, and why in other cases they can.

I would imagine it's either trademark issues (the designer wouldn't want another business to make money by using their name) OR, it's just a marketing ploy and the fabrics are only similar to or unrelated to what the designer used.

It depends on the they get the fabric. If the fabric is bought wholesale through traditional routes, then the designer can be mentioned. If the fabric is bought through a liquidation, or end of season and is deeply discounted, then the designer or mill can't be mentioned....that's usually in the terms of the sale. For instance I used to work for a wholesaler that bought end of season fabrics from Patagonia and Nike, we were not allowed to say specifically where they came from, it was in the sales contract.

Or in the case of eBay and other places like them, they have trollers that regularly patrol the site looking for copyright infringement and unauthorized dealers and then they pull the ads.
For a regular online store, they also may not be an authorized dealer...
